Vienna has 17 Christmas markets in this guide. The Wiener Christkindlmarkt on Rathausplatz (13 Nov - 26 Dec 2026) is the classic, Schönbrunn is the prettiest for families, and Spittelberg and the Altwiener Christkindlmarkt on the Freyung are the most atmospheric. The Wintermarkt at the Prater Ferris wheel runs the longest, until 6 January 2027.

Almost everyone is delighted by the backdrop in front of the illuminated palace, plus plenty of space, cleanliness and a well-thought-out mug deposit system. There is a lot for children to do. Criticism: Saturday evening almost as full as in the city centre, and prices are rather upmarket.
Vienna's prettiest market for families - best on a weekday and only after dark, when everything is lit.

For many one of Europe's most atmospheric markets: enchanting lighting, lovingly designed stalls, a good layout and a paradise for children. On weekdays at 6 pm it is pleasant, at weekends you move at walking pace in places. Some notice cost-cutting with staff and very many tourists.
Vienna's classic and a must - on a weekday in the early evening; with children definitely go into the Rathauspark.
