    On weekdays visitors experience a relaxed, fairytale mood in the medieval town - like a Christmas bubble, with St Nicholas for the children and stalls with handmade goods at fair prices. On Saturday, by contrast, it is extremely full, with long queues and a difficult search for parking; some find the chalets loveless.

    One of Germany's most romantic markets - but only on weekdays; at weekends the town is overcrowded.

    • Car parks P1-P5 outside the town wall; at weekends come early.

    Worth knowing

    • The town wall is narrow and jams up when there are many visitors.
