Many like the intimate, cosy mood, friendly staff and fair prices for mulled wine, currywurst and crêpes - a pleasant alternative to the overcrowded city-centre markets. Many are surprised how extensive the market is - fine with a pushchair, with different themed areas. Very crowded on Fridays and at weekends. Some Leipzig residents miss Christmas music and find the offering the same every year.
Large and varied - plan at least half a day.

If you want something away from the big Leipzig market, you will find it here: creative crafts, friendly vendors, no crush and no drinking binge, and covered in bad weather. There is hardly anything for children, and Christmas decoration is sparse.
Leipzig's best alternative market for gifts with character - weekends only.

On weekdays visitors experience a relaxed, fairytale mood in the medieval town - like a Christmas bubble, with St Nicholas for the children and stalls with handmade goods at fair prices. On Saturday, by contrast, it is extremely full, with long queues and a difficult search for parking; some find the chalets loveless.
One of Germany's most romantic markets - but only on weekdays; at weekends the town is overcrowded.

- Free entry, prices fair.
Getting there and parking
- By train via Steinach to Rothenburg, 10 minutes on foot from the station.
- Car parks P1-P5 outside the town wall; at weekends come early.
Worth knowing
- Come on a weekday - on Saturdays you are pushed through the lanes.
- The town wall is narrow and jams up when there are many visitors.
