Where to find the best Christmas markets in Europe

Germany has the most and the best known: Nuremberg, Dresden (the Striezelmarkt, dating from 1434), Cologne, Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt and Stuttgart. In France look to Strasbourg and Colmar; in Austria to Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck; in Switzerland to Zurich, Basel and Montreux. Prague, Brussels, Bruges, Budapest, Krakow, Wroclaw, Tallinn and Copenhagen each have their own page too, and the country pages group all of a country's cities.

2026 opening dates of the big markets

Vienna's Rathausplatz market opens 13 November, Copenhagen's Jul i Tivoli 13 November, Salzburg's Christkindlmarkt 19 November, Berlin's Gendarmenmarkt 23 November, Stuttgart 25 November, Nuremberg 27 November, Strasbourg 27 November, Brussels 27 November and Prague 28 November. Where the 2026 dates are not out, as for Paris, Rome, Madrid and Barcelona, we show the latest confirmed edition.

When to go

Most markets in Europe open in the second half of November and run until 23 or 24 December; many in Austria, Prague, Brussels, Bruges and the Nordic and Baltic cities keep going until early January. Weekday afternoons are the calmest time; Saturday evenings in December are the busiest. Each city page shows the 2026 dates where the organiser has announced them.

Money, mugs and tickets

Most markets are free to walk into. Hot drinks usually come in a mug with a deposit you get back when you return it — or keep the mug as a souvenir. Some markets ask for a ticket on busy days; each market's card says which.

Questions

What are the best Christmas markets in Europe?
It depends on what you want: the old-town classics (Dresden, Nuremberg, Strasbourg, Colmar, Vienna, Salzburg, Prague), a lakeside market (Montreux, Geneva) or a small market with local makers. Each city page says which market suits kids, a date or a group of friends.
When do Christmas markets in Europe open in 2026?
Most open between 13 and 28 November 2026 and close on 23 or 24 December. Vienna opens 13 November, Nuremberg and Strasbourg 27 November, Prague 28 November. Brussels, Bruges, Prague and Tallinn run into January 2027.
Which country has the most Christmas markets?
Germany: our guide covers Nuremberg, Dresden, Cologne, Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Dusseldorf, Aachen, Heidelberg and Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Austria, France and Switzerland follow with several cities each.

No. Stallholders at the big markets in tourist cities usually speak some English, and prices are on display. The city pages give the practical details — dates, entry, transport — in English.
