Christmas markets in Canada: 159 markets in 13 cities
Wooden cabins, mulled wine, local makers and maple treats: from Toronto's Distillery Winter Village to the Shipyards in North Vancouver and Spruce Meadows outside Calgary, Canada's Christmas markets have become a December tradition. We checked 159 markets in 13 cities — dates, entry and whether you need a ticket.

Every market is confirmed on the organiser's page, the city's tourism board or local press. We list the Christmas markets and the big seasonal holiday markets in each city, not every church bazaar or one-day craft fair. Where the 2026 dates are out we show them; otherwise last season's — most markets repeat on the same weeks. Quebec has its own, much longer list in French.

Where the Christmas market comes from
Markets that sold food and gifts in the weeks before Christmas go back to the late Middle Ages in German-speaking towns — Dresden's Striezelmarkt is recorded in 1434. Canada's German communities kept the custom: Kitchener, which was called Berlin until 1916, holds a Christkindl Market at City Hall, and Winnipeg's German Canadian Congress runs a Christkindlmarkt. The big city markets — the Distillery in Toronto, Jack Poole Plaza in Vancouver, Lansdowne in Ottawa — came later and made it a national habit.
What to eat, drink and buy
Mulled wine and hot chocolate, sausages and pretzels at the German-style markets, and Canadian treats almost everywhere: maple candy, butter tarts, tourtière in Quebec. To take home: ornaments, candles, knitwear, pottery and jewellery from local makers — Indigenous markets in Ottawa, Edmonton and Calgary are some of the best places for gifts made here.
Tips for a good visit
Go on a weekday afternoon — weekend evenings in December are packed, and the ticketed markets (the Distillery on weekends, Vancouver, Spruce Meadows, Banff, Fort Edmonton Park) sell out their Saturday slots first. Take transit where you can; the Shipyards in North Vancouver is a short SeaBus ride from downtown. Dress for standing outside for two hours.
Questions
- What is the biggest Christmas market in Canada?
- Toronto's Distillery Winter Village and the Quebec City German Christmas Market are the best known; Calgary's Spruce Meadows market and the Vancouver Christmas Market draw the biggest crowds in the West. For sheer numbers of makers, the One of a Kind show in Toronto and Christmas at the Forum in Halifax are the largest indoor events.
- Are Canadian Christmas markets free?
- Many are, but not all. The Distillery Winter Village is free on weekdays and ticketed on weekends; the Vancouver Christmas Market, Spruce Meadows, Banff and the Edmonton market at Fort Edmonton Park sell tickets. Montreal's and Quebec City's big markets and Ottawa's are free to enter. Each listing says which.
- When do Christmas markets open in Canada?
- The big ones open in mid to late November — the Distillery and Vancouver around November 12–13, Spruce Meadows and Millarville in early November — and most close on December 23 or 24. The Distillery, Ottawa and Montreal's Grand Marché stay open past Christmas.
- What is a Christkindl market?
- The German name for a Christmas market — literally the Christ Child's market: wooden huts, glühwein in a souvenir mug, bratwurst, gingerbread and handmade ornaments. Kitchener's, at City Hall, is the best-known in Canada.
