Christmas markets in Montreal

Montreal's big Christmas market is the Grand Marché de Noël on the Place des Festivals; the Christmas village at Atwater Market is the smaller, cosier one. A "bonjour" goes a long way.

Visitors like the atmosphere and come with kids and again on a date. The recurring criticisms: fewer artisans than hoped in some categories (lots of jewellery and candles), pricey street food and a disappointing mulled wine — several recommend the hot cider instead.

Worth an evening in the Quartier des spectacles for the atmosphere, especially between Christmas and New Year — eat in the neighbourhood and order the hot cider.

    What's there

    • Makers' chalets by the Lachine Canal
    • Santa's office and an elf kingdom for kids
    • Atwater Market next door

Families like Santa — patient with the kids — and the setting; others find the stalls repetitive and the outdoor raclette cold. Check Santa's hours before you go.

A good outing with small children combined with shopping at Atwater Market; for gifts, the Grand Marché has more.
