Free Christmas lights
Niagara Falls' Winter Festival of Lights is billed as Canada's largest free outdoor light festival — about three million lights along an 8 km route, with fireworks on Friday and Saturday nights. Lights at Lafarge in Coquitlam is Metro Vancouver's largest free display, and Toronto's Cavalcade of Lights, Ottawa's Winter Lights Across Canada and Windsor's Bright Lights are free too.
Drive-through light shows
For cold prairie nights, stay in the car: Saskatoon's BHP Enchanted Forest and Winnipeg's Canad Inns Winter Wonderland are priced per vehicle, as are the Magic of Lights routes in Ottawa, Barrie and Edmonton.
Garden and park light festivals
Botanical gardens and parks put on the most atmospheric shows: VanDusen and Canyon Lights in Vancouver, the Butchart Gardens near Victoria, RBG Winter Wonders in Burlington and Glow in Langley and Edmonton. Most use timed tickets — book ahead for weekends.
