For each town we list the Christmas markets the council, the tourist board or the organiser announces — not one-day school fairs or church bazaars. 2026 dates appear as soon as they're published; until then you'll see last season's, marked as such. Most markets come back on the same weeks.

Where Britain's Christmas markets come from

The German Weihnachtsmarkt reached Britain in the late 1990s: Birmingham's Frankfurt Christmas Market, run with Birmingham's twin city, and Manchester's markets started the trend. Today almost every city has one, from the cathedral closes of Winchester, Lincoln and Salisbury to Edinburgh's huge winter festival in Princes Street Gardens.

What to eat, drink and buy

Mulled wine and hot cider, German bratwurst and pretzels, but also British favourites — mince pies, roasted chestnuts, hog roast rolls and hot chocolate with all the toppings. Many markets now serve drinks in reusable cups with a deposit. To take home: handmade decorations, candles, local food and drink, and gifts from small makers.

Tips for a good visit

Go on a weekday or early on a Saturday; Friday and Saturday evenings in December are rammed in Manchester, Edinburgh and Bath. Use park and ride or the train — city-centre car parks fill by late morning. Some markets and winter festivals sell timed or ticketed entry, especially for rides and ice rinks: check the card before you set off.

Questions

When do the UK Christmas markets open in 2026?
Most of the big city markets open in mid to late November — Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh usually in the second or third week — and run to just before Christmas, with Edinburgh's festival lasting into early January. Each card says whether the 2026 dates are confirmed.
Which is the best Christmas market in the UK?
Edinburgh, Manchester, Bath, York and Birmingham are the best-known. For something smaller and prettier, the cathedral markets at Winchester and Lincoln are hard to beat. Our cards say who each one suits — families, a date, or a night out with friends.
Are UK Christmas markets free?
Most are free to walk around. Some winter festivals charge for rides, ice rinks or timed entry at busy times, and a few charge admission — each card says.
Can I take my dog?
Outdoor street markets usually allow dogs on leads, but crowds are hard on them. Some festivals in parks and many cathedral grounds don't allow dogs — check the card's "worth knowing" notes.
