Not many messages in this exact mix, so we added the closest ones.
Thank you for being there this year, as always. Here's to a cosy Christmas together, with too much food and plenty of laughs.
Merry Christmas, my lovelies! So glad I've got you.
To my wonderful family: this year has flown by, which makes Christmas Day around one table feel even more special. Thank you for every phone call, every hug and every roast potato you saved for me. I wish you a peaceful Christmas, good health and a happy New Year. I love you all.

Write the card in four lines
Think of one specific thing. The rest can be short. A card with only a name looks like a mailshot; one personal line changes everything.
- 1
Greet them by name
“Dear Auntie Jean,”
- 2
Say one specific thing from this year
“Thank you for coming all the way from Leeds to Sophie's school play. It meant the world to her.”
- 3
Make your wish
“I hope you have a peaceful Christmas and that the trip you keep talking about finally happens in 2027.”
- 4
Close warmly
“Lots of love, the Smiths”
Sign-offs
- With love,
- Lots of love,
- Love and hugs,
- Best wishes,
- Warmest wishes,
- Kind regards,
- Happy Christmas from,
- Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from,
- God bless,
- With best wishes for the festive season,
- Cheers,
- xx
"With love" or "Lots of love" for family and close friends, "Best wishes" or "Kind regards" for colleagues and neighbours, "Warmest wishes" or "Season's greetings" for customers and the boss, "God bless" for Christian cards.
How to sign a Christmas card
Families, couples, single parents, pets, teams, new neighbours, Secret Santa and first names versus formal. There is no wrong way, but some sound better than others.
Family
Love from the Smith family
Or with every name: "Tom, Jane, Anna and Max". Adults first, then the children from eldest to youngest.
Couple
Anna and Tom
The order doesn't matter. With the same surname: "Anna and Tom Smith" or "Mr and Mrs Smith".
Single parent with children
Lots of love, Dora, Max and Ella
You're a family. A row of names always works.
With a pet
Love from Alex, Sara and Teddy the dog (woof!)
The pet goes last. A paw print next to the signature always goes down well.
Team or business
With best wishes, everyone at Sunshine Dental
For customers add the name of one real person so the card doesn't look like a mailshot.
New neighbours
Anna and Tom, flat 22, green door
The flat number helps them remember who you are.
Someone grieving
Thinking of you, Helen
Keep it simple, with no family photo and no jolly slogans.
First names or formal?
Dear Mrs Smith, / Dear Anna,
If you're unsure, stay formal until they use your first name. In the UK many colleagues are on first-name terms; match the way you talk in person.
Secret Santa card
Happy Christmas from your Secret Santa
Keep it kind and anonymous; leave out in-jokes the whole team won't get.
What to write in a Christmas card
What should I write in a Christmas card?
Use four parts: a greeting with their name, one specific personal line (a shared memory, a thank-you, something you noticed about their year), a wish for them and a warm sign-off. The personal line is what people remember; everything else can be short. Pick a ready-made message above and add that one line.
What are good short Christmas messages for a text or WhatsApp?
Choose the "Short" length and tap "WhatsApp": the text opens straight in the chat. Examples: "Merry Christmas, my lovelies! So glad I've got you" or "Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year!". Putting their name first makes it feel personal.
What are funny, original Christmas messages?
The ones that mention something only the two of you know: a shared joke, the burnt sprouts, last year's crackers. Choose the "Funny" tone and add your own line. A real detail beats any ready-made joke.
What should I write in a card for family?
Thank them for something specific (the help, the preparations, the days together), say what the shared table means to you and wish them good health and a restful time. The "Family" category runs from one-liners to a full letter.
What is the difference between "Merry Christmas" and "Happy Christmas"?
In Britain both are normal, and "Happy Christmas" is a little more traditional. Either works for almost anyone. If you don't know someone's beliefs, the "Happy holidays" tone has no religious references; "Blessings" suits Christian cards.
Who brings presents in the UK and what can I mention to children?
Father Christmas (Santa) comes on Christmas Eve and fills the stockings; presents are opened on Christmas morning. For children you can mention a sherry and a mince pie left out, a carrot for the reindeer, and the stocking by the fireplace. The "Children and grandchildren" category has texts like this.
Colleagues, boss and customers
What should I write in a Christmas card for customers?
Thank them for their custom, say what working with them meant and wish them a peaceful holiday and a successful New Year. Sign with the name of a real person rather than just the company, and if you close over Christmas, say the date you reopen. Keep adverts out of the card.
What should I write in a Christmas card for my boss?
Thank them for something specific (trust, feedback, an opportunity) and wish them and their family a lovely holiday. Keep it polite, keep any humour gentle, and don't mention pay, bonuses or workload.
What should I write for colleagues at Christmas?
Keep it short and friendly: one specific thank-you, a wish for a proper rest and your name at the end. For a Secret Santa card, stay kind and anonymous. If you don't know whether someone celebrates Christmas, choose the "Happy holidays" tone.
Harder situations
What do I write to someone having a hard time at Christmas?
Don't write a bouncy "Merry Christmas". Say you're thinking of them, that this time of year can be heavy and offer something concrete, like a visit or a lunch. Choose "Someone having a hard time". A short message is always better than silence.
Can I send a Christmas card by WhatsApp or email?
Yes, plenty of people do. Make the card here, download the image and send it by WhatsApp or email, or share it straight from your phone. Nothing is stored on our servers and the card has no watermark.
Is it free and do I need to sign up?
Yes, it is free and there is no sign-up. The card is made in your browser, downloaded as a PNG and has no watermark, so you can print it at 4×6 inches or send it on.
