Secret Santa generator: draw names in a minute
Add the names, keep couples apart, set a budget in rupees and a date, then send each person a private link on WhatsApp. No sign-up, no email, and the names never leave your phone: each person's pair lives only inside their own link.
1 · Who's joining?
Or paste a list: one name per line, or separated by commas.
2 · Budget, date and rules
Who should not get whom?
Couples, roommates or last year's pairs. It works both ways: neither will get the other.
3 · Send everyone their name
How it works
1
Add everyone
Type the names or paste a list from your office or college WhatsApp group. Give your Secret Santa a name if you like; it shows on every link.
2
Set the rules
Set a budget in rupees, the date, a short note, and any pairs who should not get each other, such as couples or roommates.
3
Send the links
Each person gets their own link on WhatsApp, showing only the name they buy for. Or print folded slips, or pass one phone around the room.
Secret Santa rules that keep everyone happy
- Fix the budget in the group before the draw and stay within it. A common complaint is one person spending far more than the rest.
- Keep it secret until the exchange. If you need a size or a preference, ask the organiser or a common friend.
- Use the note for dietary needs and things to avoid, such as 'no leather' or 'no non-vegetarian food', and for 'no vouchers' if the group prefers a real gift.
- Decide the date and how gifts will be given: wrapped with a name tag, left on the organiser's desk, or opened together at the party.
- If someone drops out after the draw, the organiser redoes it from the backup link and everyone gets a new link.
Secret Santa at the office
Secret Santa is a popular way for Indian offices, start-ups and colleges to celebrate December together, whether or not everyone celebrates Christmas itself. Many teams treat it as a general end-of-year gift exchange.
Make taking part optional, and let people know the date early. A budget everyone is comfortable with matters more than the amount itself, so agree it as a team and put it in the note so it appears on every link.
Hybrid and multi-city teams can join without being in the same room. Everyone opens their own link on WhatsApp, and gifts can be couriered or left with the organiser, with a clear deadline.
Choose gifts that suit anyone: a nice mug, a desk plant, snacks, a notebook or something small and useful. Check the note for food preferences, and keep gifts respectful of different customs and diets.
Use the exclusion list for couples working in the same team, or for pairs that already exchange gifts, so everyone ends up with a fresh name.
Questions about Secret Santa
- How does Secret Santa work?
- Everyone's name goes into a draw and each person secretly gets one other person to buy a gift for. On the exchange day everybody gives and receives one present within the agreed budget, and the giver can stay anonymous.
- Is this Secret Santa generator really free, with no sign-up?
- Yes. There are no accounts, no email addresses and no phone numbers. The draw happens in your browser and each person's pair travels only inside their own link.
- What budget should we set for Secret Santa in India?
- Let your group decide before the draw. Teams and colleges often pick a modest amount that suits everyone; type it into the budget box in rupees and it shows on every link.
- Can I stop couples or roommates getting each other?
- Yes. Add the pair under 'Who should not get whom?'. It works both ways, and if the exclusions make a fair draw impossible the tool tells you.
- Will the organiser see who has whom?
- Not unless they open someone else's link or the backup link. An organiser who wants to play just opens only their own link.
- What if someone loses their link?
- Keep the organiser's backup link. Opening it restores this exact draw so you can resend one person's link. It shows everything, so keep it private.
- Can we do it for a team in different cities?
- Yes. Send each person's link on WhatsApp, agree a deadline and decide whether gifts will be couriered or handed over. Nobody needs to be in the same place for the draw.
- What's the difference between Secret Santa and White Elephant?
- In Secret Santa each person buys for one drawn name. In White Elephant everyone brings one gift for the pile and players take turns choosing or stealing. Gifts that suit anyone work for both.
