Christmas markets, Filipino style
Christmas starts in September here, and December is bazaar season: malls, schools and parishes all hold Christmas bazaars. The closest thing to a European Christmas market is Baguio's, among the pines of Burnham Park, with chalet-style stalls — the cool mountain air helps. Tagaytay's bazaar is a popular stop on the way up the ridge.
What to eat and buy
Bibingka, puto bumbong, hot tsokolate and salabat, plus ube treats and strawberry taho in Baguio. To take home: parol lanterns, woven crafts, local coffee and pasalubong.
Tips for a good visit
Weekends in December bring heavy traffic up to Baguio and Tagaytay — go on a weekday or early morning, and bring a jacket for Baguio evenings.
