San Diego's two big free displays are neighborhoods, and its biggest free night is December Nights in Balboa Park — where the smart move is the free shuttle, not the $30-plus parking.

Around 200 families put giant Christmas-card cut-outs in their yards against walls of lights, along Oviedo, Ellingham, Renata and the streets around them.

Getting in and parking

  • Four City College garages are free, first come first served (16th & Russ, 16th & Broadway, 17th & C, C & 13th). The free shuttle picks up at 16th and B Street.
  • Other free shuttle stops: 3rd and A Streets, and Beech Street at Kettner Blvd. Last shuttles leave the park at 11:15 pm.
  • Paid parking inside the event cost $32.95 in advance, $37.95 on the day, card only (last published price).

Which Christmas lights in San Diego are free?
Christmas Card Lane (Rancho Peñasquitos), Jingle Bell Hill (El Cajon), December Nights (Balboa Park). None of them sell tickets, but some charge for parking and the busiest neighborhoods have long lines, so check each card and go on a weeknight.
When do the San Diego light displays open this year?
So far December Nights (Dec 4 – 5, 2026) and Lightscape (Nov 20, 2026 – Jan 3, 2027) and Coastal Christmas (Opens Dec 11, 2026) have announced their 2026 dates. The rest publish in October and November; until then this page shows last year's dates, marked as such.
