Christmas lights in Houston

Houston spreads its lights over an hour's drive in every direction: the botanic garden and the zoo in town, the drive-thrus out in Katy and Spring, the biggest walk-through festival at the Fort Bend fairgrounds, and Moody Gardens down in Galveston. The free option is River Oaks, where the grandest houses in the city light up for December.

Getting in and parking

  • Start from Westheimer and head up River Oaks Boulevard, turning onto Del Monte and Inwood, until you reach the country club.
  • Traffic gets heavy near Christmas — go on a weekday evening or early in the season, or park and walk part of it.

Getting in and parking

  • No-parking zones and traffic control are in force on the night. Zion Lutheran Church on the north end of Beauchamp runs pay-what-you-can parking.
  • There is a bike valet at Woodland and Norhill.
  • Wagons and strollers are fine; golf carts and powered scooters are not.

  • The zoo has no parking lot of its own. There is free parking in Hermann Park, but it fills up.
  • The zoo's own advice: park at the 6400 Fannin garage and take the METRORail Red Line to Memorial Hermann Hospital/Houston Zoo, then walk about ten minutes through Hermann Park.

River Oaks (Inside the Loop, west of downtown), Lights in the Heights (Woodland Heights). None of them sell tickets, but some charge for parking and the busiest neighborhoods have long lines, so check each card and go on a weeknight.
