Write your own in four lines

The line people remember is the specific one. Everything else can be short. A card that has only a name at the bottom looks like a form; one personal line fixes that.

  1. 1

    Greet them by name

    “Dear Aunt Linda,”

  2. 2

Say one specific thing from this year

“Thank you for driving four hours to see Maya's recital. It meant the world to her.”

  3. 3

    Add your wish for them

“We hope your Christmas is cozy and your new year is full of the travel you've been planning.”

  4. 4

    Sign off warmly

    “With love, the Garcias”

Ways to sign off

  • With love,
  • Warmest wishes,
  • Merry Christmas and much love,
  • Love and joy,
  • With love at Christmas,
  • Wishing you all the best,
  • Season's greetings,
  • Warm regards and happy holidays,
  • Cheers to a great new year,
  • Peace and love,
  • Blessings,
  • With gratitude,
  • Hugs from our house to yours,
  • Joy and peace,

Warm for family, “Warm regards” for coworkers and neighbors, “Season's greetings” for clients, “Blessings” for faith-based cards.

How to sign a Christmas card

Families, couples, single parents, pets, work teams and new neighbors. There's no wrong way, but some ways read better.

  • A family

    With love, the Johnsons

Or list first names: "Mark, Priya, Ava and Leo". Adults first, then kids by age.

  • A couple

    Sam & Jordan

Either name can go first. Same surname? "Sam and Jordan Lee" or "the Lees".

  • A couple with different surnames

    Maria Lopez & Tom Reed

Full names on both, or first names to people who know you well.

  • Single parent with kids

    Love, Dana, Noah and Ellie

Your family is a family. A first-name list is always correct.

  • With pets

Love, Alex, Sam and Biscuit (woof!)

Pets go last. Add a paw print if you feel like it.

  • A work team

From all of us at Harbor Dental

For clients, add one person's name so it reads as personal.

  • New neighbors

Sam & Jordan, No. 22, the green door

A house number helps new neighbors place you. Add a phone number if you'd like to be easy to reach.

  • Grieving friend

    Thinking of you, Elena

Keep it simple, skip the printed family photo, and don't use a cheerful sign-off.

What to write in a Christmas card

What should I write in a Christmas card?

Use four parts: a greeting with their name, one specific personal line (a shared memory, a thank-you, something you noticed about their year), a wish for them, and a warm sign-off. The personal line is what people remember; everything else can be short. Pick a ready-made message above and add that one line.

What are some good words to put in a Christmas card?

Warm, plain words work best: "joy", "peace", "thank you", "thinking of you", "wishing you", "love". Say what you actually mean in your own voice rather than copying a poem; a sincere sentence beats a grand one.

What is a short, uplifting Christmas message?

Try "Wishing you peace, joy and all the best this Christmas", "Merry Christmas to our favorite people!" or "Missing you extra this Christmas. Lots of love." Short works best when it's clearly meant for that person. Choose "Short" in the generator for lines that fit a text or WhatsApp message.

What are nice things to say in a card?

Thank them for something specific, tell them what you enjoy about them, and wish them something that fits their life (rest, travel, a good year at work). "I'm so glad you're in my life" and "This year was better because of you" never fail.

What is a good closing for a Christmas card?

"With love" for family and close friends, "Warmest wishes" or "Warm regards" for coworkers and neighbors, "Season's greetings" for clients, "Blessings" for religious cards. Then your name or names. There's a list of 14 sign-offs further down.

What is a short meaningful Christmas quote?

Dickens gave us "God bless us, every one!" in A Christmas Carol (1843), and it's in the public domain. For faith-based cards, the King James Version of Luke 2:14 is a classic: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men." Or write your own sentence; it will mean more.

How can I wish Merry Christmas in a unique way?

Make it specific to the person: mention an inside joke, a favorite tradition, or a plan for the new year. "Merry Christmas, and I hope the cat finally leaves the tree alone" is more memorable than any poem. Use the funny tone and add your own line.

Coworkers, boss and clients

What do you write in a Christmas card to a coworker?

Keep it friendly and brief: thank them for something specific, wish them a good break, and sign with your name. "Thanks for all the help this year. Enjoy a well-deserved break, and Merry Christmas!" is enough. Choose the Happy Holidays tone if you don't know their traditions.

How do you say best wishes to a coworker?

"Wishing you a restful holiday and a great new year" or "Thanks for a great year working together, all the best to you and your family." Add one detail from the year, such as a project you shared, so it doesn't read like a form letter.

What should I write to my boss?

Thank them for something concrete (trust, feedback, an opportunity) and wish them and their family a good holiday. Keep the humor mild and skip anything about raises or workload. A short handwritten line on a printed card is perfect.

What do I write to clients or customers?

Thank them, say what working together meant to you, and wish them a good season and a successful new year. Use "Happy holidays" or "Season's greetings", add a real name at the bottom, and don't turn the card into an advertisement.

The tricky ones

Should I write "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays"?

Write what fits the person. For people you know celebrate Christmas, "Merry Christmas" is warm and personal. For coworkers, clients or anyone whose traditions you don't know, "Happy holidays" or "Season's greetings" is kind and never wrong. Use the Happy Holidays tone in the generator.

What do you write to your partner's parents or someone you don't know well?

Thank them for something specific (a dinner, a welcome), say you're looking forward to seeing them, and sign with your name and your partner's. Warm but not too intimate is the goal. Pick "Partner's parents" in the generator.

What do you write in a Christmas card to someone who is grieving?

Don't wish them a merry Christmas. Acknowledge that the season may be hard, name the person they lost if you knew them, and tell them you're thinking of them and are there if they need you. A card is better than silence. Short and honest is best, and offer something concrete, such as a call or a meal.

How do you sign a Christmas card from a family?

List everyone's first names, adults first, then children, then pets if you like, or use the family name: "With love, the Johnsons". On a couple's card, either name can go first. See the signing examples below for blended families, single parents and new neighbors.

Is it OK to put money in a Christmas card?

Yes. Cash or a gift card in a card is a common and welcome thank-you for people like teachers, hairdressers, mail carriers or babysitters. Add a short handwritten line of thanks so it feels personal, not transactional. Some workplaces limit what staff can accept: US mail carriers, for example, may take a gift worth up to $20 but not cash or cash-like gift cards, and many schools have their own rules.

Can I send a Christmas message on WhatsApp instead of a card?

Yes, and many people prefer it for friends and family. Pick "Short" in the generator, press "WhatsApp", and the message opens in your chat ready to send. Or make a free card image and send that. Nothing is saved on our side.
